YMAC News issue 24 now available for download

The latest issue of YMAC News is now available for you to download. Our cover story is about the Banjima people’s on-country native title determination at Karijini National Park, and includes lots of photos from the day.

There is also a story about a significant win in the High Court by the Ngarla people that will have ramifications for native title claims nation-wide.

The Kurama and Marthudunera people and the Gnulli people have both entered into agreements with resource companies that are featured in this issue.

Opportunity to attend National Coast to Coast Conference 2014

The Northern Agricultural Catchment Council (NACC) is offering a subsidy for up to four  coastal community members from across the Northern  Agricultural Region to attend the  Coast to Coast Conference 2014 to be held in Mandurah between 27-31 October 2014.

The Coast to Coast Conference is a forum for people with an interest in coastal, estuarine and marine matters to meet and to share knowledge and experiences in the areas of management, science, policy, governance, advocacy and other related topics. Expressions of interest are now being sought by NACC for community members from the Northern Agricultural Region (from the Shire of Gin Gin to Shire of Northampton) who are involved in land management or coastal care in their communities.

Held during NAIDOC week, the forum is free and open to all Indigenous men and women who are working in the mining, oil and gas or related industries.

Congratulations to Miss NAIDOC winner Ashlea Walley

On Saturday 24th May Noongar/Yamatji woman Ashlea Walley was announced as 2014 Miss NAIDOC Perth at the final ceremony held in the Perth Concert Hall.

Ashlea joined nine other finalists from across the state including Yamatji woman Jaimee Coster and Noongar/Nyiyaparli woman Amy Groves in celebrating the completion of the Miss NAIDOC leadership and empowerment program.

YMAC would like to congratulate Ashlea and all the Miss NAIDOC finalist on their achievement.

Anniversary of the Mabo Decision

Today marks 22 years since the landmark decision  Mabo v. Queensland (No 2). That High Court decision overturned the doctrine of terra nullius, which was the legal fiction that Australia was unoccupied land when the British arrived, and had allowed Australian governments to ignore Aboriginal land rights for so long. The High Court found that native title exists, and that traditional owners have rights to the land, in accordance with traditional systems of law, except where those rights have been expressly extinguished (for example, through private ownership).

As a result of the High Court decision, the Federal Government, led by Prime Minister Paul Keating, introduced the Native Title Act 1993 to say how native title can be recognised.
The anniversary of the High Court decision, 3 June, is a public holiday in the Torres Strait every year, and also marks the end of National Reconciliation Week.

National Reconciliation Week is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey—the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

The week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort.

Join Malgana elder Ada Fossa as she speaks about her book “Stories Laughter and Tears through Bygone Years in Shark Bay” this Saturday in Geraldton.

“My name is Ada Mary Fossá, born Ada Mary Poland on the 8th November 1934. I am a 6th generation Indigenous resident of Shark Bay and also a Malgana elder.
This book is a collection of stories from my memories of growing up and living in Shark Bay with input from some old time residents also included.
There are no airs and graces, no research about this book, just telling it the way it was when we were young and remembering what our parents and grandparents taught us and the places they took us to. It might give an insight into how privileged this present generation is compared to ours many years ago.”

Community NRM Grants

Local community across WA can now apply for the State Government’s 2014-15 Natural Resource Management grants of between $10,000 and $50,000 to help conserve, restore, rehabilitate and enhance landscapes or conserve biodiversity.

Free online training at the Geraldton Digital Hub
