Applications are now open for the 2014 National Indigenous Youth Parliament

The National Indigenous Youth parliament brings together 50 young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 16-25 from across Australia to meet in Canberra, discuss ideas, learn from mentors and present a number of draft bills to the Government.

Six Western Australians, aged 16-25 will be chosen to participate. The program involves of a training day in April with the other WA delegates, and a week of debate and professional development in Canberra in May with the delegates from all of the States and Territories.

Participants will be chosen based on their community involvement, ideas, and interest in government and the parliamentary process.

The program is run by the Australian Electoral Commission’s Indigenous Electoral Participation Program This is a unique opportunity for young people to learn how the system works, present their ideas to the Government, and connect with other future Indigenous leaders.

OneSight Indigenous Design Competition

OneSight are seeking an aspiring Indigenous artist to create a piece of art which symbolises their culture and the importance of vision to their community.

OneSight is a not-for profit organisation working globally to provide free eye-screenings, free glasses where needed and eye-health education to disadvantaged and remote communities.

The winning piece of artwork will be used to create  limited edition Ray Ban Wayfarers frames with the artist with artists name printed on the inside arm of the frame and the artists story being recognised inside the packing. The artist will also receive a licence fee for each pair produced and $10 000 to be put towards the professional development of their choice. Fifty dollars from the sale of each pair will be donated to OneSight programs in rural and regional Indigenous communities across Australia.

NIYLA Opens Applications for National Gathering

The National Indigenous Young Leaders Academy is a Foundation for Young Australian initiative which aims to empower indigenous young people to lead change within their communities and at a national level. Applications for the NIYLA 2014 National Gathering are now open.

The National Gathering will be held in Arcadia (NSW) from 25th May – 30th May and is part of a 12 week online program running from 25th April – 25th July. If successful in the application process the cost of travel, accommodation and meals will be covered by the NIYLA.

Applications are open for all young indigenous people age 15-18 and need to be received before 5th March 2014. For more information click here.

Pilbara Development Commission – Call for Board Nominations

The Pilbara Development Commission is seeking nominations to fill one community position on the Pilbara Development Commission Board. This provides an excellent opportunity for a local community member to play a role in guiding the future direction of the Commission and representing the Pilbara community to ensure the is local input into the future development of the region.

The Commission is seeking nominations from highly motivated and enthusiastic people for the community position, who can demonstrate the following:

  • Should posses interest, experience and knowledge relevant to regional communities and must live in the Pilbara region
  • Paid or Voluntary involvement in economic or social development in the Pilbara region
  • Ability to work cooperatively to achieve agreed goals across a wide range of social and economic issues

Fellowship opportunity for WA Aboriginal artist

The WA Department of Culture and the Arts is offering an Arts Forward Indigenous Fellowship worth $25,000. It will be open to  individual established Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and arts-workers in any art form excluding film, television and radio.

Applicants’ proposals can include activities over a maximum of 18 months and include mentoring with a leading professional in a chosen field; research and development; an internship or residency; the creation of new work; or a structured professional development opportunity in Australia or internationally.

The 2014 Western Australian Heritage Awards will recognise outstanding commitment and contribution to heritage conservation, adaptive reuse, tourism and interpretation in Western Australia. It also honours individuals and organisations whose work has resulted in significant achievements in the promotion and conservation of our rich cultural heritage.

Shire of Roebourne grants for community and culture

The Shire of Roebourne is again offering funding for community groups through their quarterly Community Grants and Contributions Scheme. Individuals or groups can apply for funds for either community arts and culture or sport and recreation programs.
