Free business workshops in Geraldton and Carnarvon

Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) is offering free Into Business workshops this week in Carnarvon and Geraldton to assist Aboriginal people to fully investigate and research their business ideas before taking the leap into business ownership.

The workshops are run in three parts, with part A: Your business idea, goals and expectations, running on Tuesday, 28 February in Carnarvon and Wednesday, 29 February in Geraldton.

Free information workshops on carbon farming

The Northern Agricultural Catchment Council (NACC) and Australian Carbon Traders are teaming up to offer free workshops on the Federal Government’s Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) in various regional towns.

The CFI offers land managers opportunities to earn money from activities that store carbon in the soil or reduce certain harmful emissions.

The workshops are a great opportunity to learn about carbon farming, what it is, how it works, and how it might affect you.

Workshops will be held in Morawa and Mullewa on February 15, and in Geraldton and Binnu on February 16. For more information on the workshops go to the NACC website nacc.com.au.

Get ready for NAIDOC 2012

The NAIDOC Committee recently announced the theme for the 2012 celebrations is, “Spirit of the Tent Embassy: 40 years on.”

NAIDOC Week, from 1–8 July 2012, is an opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to join together to recognise the valuable contribution Indigenous people make to Australia’s national identity.

Indigenous Australians are encouraged to nominate fellow community members to receive National NAIDOC Awards and submit entries, based on this year’s theme, to the National NAIDOC Poster Competition. The winning entry, which receives a $5000 cash prize, will feature on the 2012 National NAIDOC poster and be displayed across Australia in workplaces, schools and community organisations. Entries for the 2012 National NAIDOC Poster Competition close on Friday 30 March.

Communities and individuals can also acknowledge the contributions and talents of artists and other outstanding Indigenous individuals by nominating them for a National NAIDOC Award. There are ten award categories including the prestigious Person of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Awards. Winners will be honoured during NAIDOC Week at the premier NAIDOC event, the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony and Ball to be held in Hobart on Friday 6 July 2012. Nominations for the 2012 National NAIDOC Awards close on Friday 27 April.

Last week in Broome, the WA Minister for Environment Bill Marmion released the Indicative Management Plan for the proposed Eighty Mile Beach Marine Park. Nyangumarta traditional owners Nyaparu Rose and Janet Stewart attended the announcement on friday, as the Nyanguamrta people have had a significant involvement in the development of the Plan.

In a statement, Minister Marmion said, “The proposed Eighty Mile Beach marine park will provide protection for a unique and spectacular part of the lower west Kimberley coastline, while providing for sustainable tourism use and enjoyment of the area and the maintenance of Aboriginal culture and heritage.”

Eighty Mile Beach is an area rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage, and it is very important to the Nyangumarta people to use their vast traditional knowledge to manage the area responsibly.

Invitation to discuss Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians

The Australian Government, as part of it’s commitment to pursuing constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, have appointed an Expert Panel consisting of 20 respected individuals, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and community leaders.

The Panel is tasked with leading a broad national consultation program to seek views from across the Australian community about ideas for recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in our nation’s Constitution. These consultations offer an opportunity to share the work of the Panel and more importantly to seek views and ideas about Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

The Expert Panel will report to the Government on possible options for constitutional change to give effect to Indigenous constitutional recognition, including advice as to the level of support from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the broader community for each option by December 2011.

Two members of the Expert Panel, the Hon Fred Chaney AO and Mr Bill Lawson AM will be holding public consultations in Perth and Fremantle on 13 & 14 September. To find out more about these sessions visit the ‘You, Me, Unity’ website, as below:

A chance for Pilbara young women to shine

Pilbara Girl is an annual event which aims to showcase the beauty of local Indigenous women to the world and reflect the diverse culture and heritage of the Pilbara communities. Through professional development, deportment and grooming and modeling workshops, young women build confidence, self-esteem and pride to become the next role models and mentors for these communities.

All young Indigenous women between the ages of 16 and 25 from Port Hedland, Roebourne, Karratha and surrounding communities are called to participate.
The workshops will be held in Port Hedland August 15-19 and Roebourne and Karratha on August 22-26.

Entry forms are available from Goolarri Media. Deadlines for entry are August 7 for Port Hedland and Roebourne and August 14 for Karratha.

YMAC is seeking motivated and enthusiastic individuals who have a strong desire to work with Aboriginal communities within the Yamatji and Pilbara regions and advancing their interests through the native title process.

There are positions based in YMAC’s Geraldton, Karratha and South Hedland Offices.

You would be working to ensure claimants are informed and can participate in the management of their native title claims. You would also be acting as a source of information to the community about the organisation, the native title act and other relevant matters.

To be considered for this position, you must address briefly in your letter the following selection criteria:

• Ability to effectively and sensitively communicate and work within a team environment

• Excellent verbal, written, communication skills

• Proficiency with computers

• Good understanding of Aboriginal people, their culture and decision making processes

• Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills

• Current unrestricted manual ‘C’ class license is essential.

Leadership program for young Aboriginal West Australians

Nominations are now open for the Department of Communities’ One Sky, Many Paths Indigenous leadership program.

The program comprises:

• distance education where students learn online within their own community

• two residential week long conferences in Perth with an array of amazing Aboriginal speakers and leadership experiences

• a community project which participants will be responsible for creating, developing and implementing over a ten week period.

The training is accredited and conducted by Challenger Institute of Technology and participants will have a local mentor to help with their community project.

The residential weeks for young men are in May and August, and for young women in September and November.

Participants will need someone to nominate them, a family member, community leader or elder and all applicants have to be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander living in Western Australia and aged between 18 and 25 years.
