Durack Institute of Technology Class of 2013

On Friday 28th March, Durack Institute of Technology held its annual ceremony for the graduating students and award winners at Geraldton Grammar School.

The Class of 2013 saw almost 2000 students graduate with from  a range of courses with graduates coming from towns across the west coast including Geraldton, Carnarvon and Exmouth.

As part of the celebrations a number of awards were presented to students, including the Aboriginal Student of the Year Award. Among four finalist Regina Richardson was named the winner of the 2013 Rio Tinto Aboriginal Student of the Year.

Congratulations to Regina and all the 2013 Graduates from Durack Institute of Technology.

Free Into Business workshops

Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) are holding free Into Business workshops for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who are interested in turning a business idea into reality.

Over a series of three self-paced workshops you will have the opportunity to assess whether your idea can be developed into a commercially viable business.

The Into Business one-day workshops are held several weeks apart and cover the following broad topics:
Workshop A – your business idea, goals and expectations
Workshop B – marketing and managing your business
Workshop C – financial planning and management.

The next workshop A’s are at:

  • Carnarvon – 18 March 2014 – 8:30am – 4:30pm
  • Geraldton – 19 March 2014 – 8:30am – 4:30pm

Have your say on pastoral lease issues

The Standing Committee on Public Administration will hold public committee hearings for its inquiry into pastoral leases this November. The Committee will be travelling to Carnarvon for a public hearing on 5 November and to Port Hedland for a public hearing on 6 November.

The outcomes of the inquiry will impact on the way pastoral leases are administered into the future. Click here for more information and to view the inquiry’s terms of reference.

Members of the public can sit in on the hearings, but to have your say to the committee, contact Lauren Mesiti on 9222 7376 as soon as possible, as places are limited.

Pieces of Gutharraguda exhibition opens in Carnarvon this Friday evening

After the success of Jimmy Poland’s Pieces of Gutharraguda exhibition opening in Shark Bay in May, the exhibition will now travel to Carnarvon, where it opens at the Gwoonwardu Mia Cultural Centre this Friday, 31 May, from 5:30 to 7:30pm.

At 86 years old, respected Malgana elder and local Denham community icon, Jimmy Poland, has been carving pearl shell, emu eggs and boab nuts for many years – a skill that was passed down from his father – and he tells the story of his life in Shark Bay through the Pieces of Gutharraguda exhibition.

The exhibition will run from 31 May to 20 June 2013.

Congratulations to all players in this year’s Wadjemup Cup!

On Saturday 10th November, students from Clontarf Football Academies from across the State competed in a round robin AFL football competition held on the Sports Oval Rottnest Island. The students were selected to participate in the Wadjemup Cup based on their school attendance, commitment to their studies and upholding the values and behaviours of their respective academies.

The carnival saw involving approximately 120 students aged 12 to 15 years, competing as 5 teams from around the state:

  • Superstars (Northam, Yule Brook and Coodanup),
  • Titans (Carnarvon & Midwest),
  • Allies (Katanning, South West & Great Southern),
  • Stingrays (Roebourne, Karratha & South East)
  • Swans (Clontarf, Goldfiekds and Gilmore)

Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) is offering free Into Business workshops this week in Carnarvon and Geraldton to assist Aboriginal people to fully investigate and research their business ideas before taking the leap into business ownership.

The workshops are run in three parts, with part A: Your business idea, goals and expectations, running on:
  • Tuesday, 18 September at Fascine Lodge, 34 David Brand Drive, Carnarvon 
  • Wednesday, 19 September at Small Business Centre, 162 Marine Tce, Geraldton.

Community Grants available through resource companies

Applications are now open for community grants from BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto’s Dampier Salt.

BHP Billiton’s Community Grants Program provides financial assistance for initiatives that enhance community life in the areas of Indigenous wellbeing, environment, twonship amenity, quality education, health and wellbeing and community involvement.

Rio Tinto’s Dampier Salt is offering financial assistance to short-term community projects in the Carnarvon, Dampier, Karratha and Port Hedland areas that are unique, innovative, address community and education issues, or require infrastructure.

National Close the Gap Day, 22 March 2012

National Close the Gap Day is a day for all Australians to join together and remind our political leaders that despite their commitments to close the life expectancey gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, there is a lot of work left to be done.

The National Close the Gap Day focus for 2012 is on the need for genuine, meaningful partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health peoples at all stages of health planning and delivery.
