Give your thoughts on Native Title Reform

Posted: January 25th, 2013

Filed under: ,

The Federal Government is seeking feedback on the proposed amendments to the Native Title Act. The Native Title Amendment Bill 2012 reforms three areas of the Native Title Act:

  • it clarifies the meaning of ‘good faith’ and makes amendments to the ‘right to negotiate’;
  • it allows parties to agree to set aside historical extinguishment in parks and environmental reserves;
  • and it makes some changes to the scope and processes for voluntary ILUAs.

Written submisions are due by 31 January, and should address the proposals for reforms and whether a balance has been struck between the views of different stakeholders.

YMAC Co-Chair speaks in the national media about the future of Njamal country

Posted: August 27th, 2012

Filed under: , , , , , ,

The Njamal people of the Pilbara region of WA welcomed a visit by United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, James Anaya on their country last week. Professor Anaya visited the site of a joint venture between the Njamal people and Fortescue Metals Group (FMG), the North Star Project.

The Njamal People and FMG entered into an agreement in December 2011 that will protect significant cultural sites and lead to the creation of a joint venture to run a mining operation on an orebody adjacent to FMG’s proposed North Star mine.

During the visit, YMAC Co-Chair and Njamal elder Mrs. Doris Eaton spoke to Fairfax media about the joint venture and what it means for Njamal people and country.
Read the full story in the Sydney Morning Herald here.

Professor Anaya had the opportunity to meet with the Njamal people and representatives of FMG to learn more about this unique land access agreement. He also visited significant Njamal heritage sites, including rock art complexes, and spoke with the Njamal people about the effect that mining has had on their community.

“I’m grateful to the Njamal people for the opportunity to meet with them on their country, along with representatives of FMG, and learn about a unique and potentially beneficial arrangement with the mining industry”, Professor Anaya said.

Mrs Eaton said “This trip was a good opportunity to show Professor Anaya and the wider community what the Njamal People have achieved through our agreement with FMG. It is important that people see the beauty of our country first hand so that we can all work together to protect our culture, heritage and stories

The Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust and The Aurora Project are seeking applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university undergraduates to participate in a UK tour of these highly regarded universities in October this year. The visit may also include a stopover at Harvard and New York Universities in the US.

Overall preference will be given to students in their final years of study, but university graduates who are wishing to undertake further study are also encouraged to apply. The successful applicants will be chosen primarily on the basis of academic achievement (Distinction or higher), but also on the basis of their potential to become leaders in their field and in their communities. There is also the opportunity for these students to become Charlie Perkins Scholars in the future.

The project aims to provide Indigenous students with the opportunity to meet with academics in their field at Cambridge and Oxford. The trip will take place over one week in mid-October, with the possibility of extension to a second week if the US leg proceeds. Costs associated with travel, accommodation and meals will all be covered.

To be considered, applicants should email the following documents to fi.belcher@auroraproject.com.au by 5pm on Wednesday 1 August 2012:

details for two academic referees (email and telephone numbers)

Any questions about the application process should be emailed to Fi Belcher at the above email address, and include a contact phone number.

To read about the experiences of students who attended last year’s trip, visit the Charlie Perkins Trust 2011 testimonials. Four students from last year’s tour will be commencing study at Cambridge and Oxford in October this year, three of which received Charlie Perkins Scholarships.
