Carbon Farming Outreach Program

The University of Melbourne, with support from project partners Carbon Industry Network ICIN and IPS management consultants are designing a new ‘Train the Trainer’ Carbon Farming Outreach program funded by the Australian Government. This involves creating information and training resources to ensure information about carbon farming is accessible and easy to understand.

The program will then be used to support Carbon Outreach by trainers supported by the Australian Government in the second phase of the project.

ICIN and IPS are working together to maximise and increase First Nations participation in carbon markets through the Carbon Outreach Program by ensuring the design of these materials are useful to First Nations people.

To do this the team are running consultation workshops with First Nations people and representatives from First Nations organisations, facilitated by Noongar Wardandi woman Katie Clarke. They would like to hear from as many First Nations people as possible, whether or not you already work on a carbon project.

In the workshops they will be asking:
• What have you learned from your experience about delivering information about carbon markets? What works and what doesn’t work?
• What existing resources do you find useful, what resources are missing?
• What learning and teaching methods do you consider to be best practice?
• How can we make this carbon outreach program more accessible?

About the project

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) has contracted the University of Melbourne to develop a Carbon Farming Outreach Program.
ICIN and IPS have been engaged through University of Melbourne to assist with embedding First Nations voices and perspectives into this project.

During the initial consultation, the project is seeking First Nations expertise and experience to guide the development of content that is culturally appropriate and accessible for First Nations carbon farming enterprises, and that embeds First Nations perspectives to guide everyone who participates in the program in Caring for Country principles.

Perth Walk for Yes on 17 September

In October, Australians will head to the polls with a chance to make history.

We will be given the chance to listen to First Nations people, recognise their history and culture, and protect their voices in the Australian constitution.

YMAC is proud to be supporting a Yes vote at the upcoming Voice to Parliament referendum, having previously committed to supporting the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

As the referendum date gets closer and momentum builds, supporters from all over Australia are joining together to Walk for Yes on Sunday 17 September, and we would love to see people attend the Perth event.

Everyone is welcome to join us at the Nicky Winmar statue at Optus Stadium in Burswood from 10am to make our voices heard and support a Yes vote. This is our chance to be a part of something big.

DLGSC release Local Government election toolkit and videos in language

The State Government has reformed how Local Government elections are held, introducing optional preferential voting and a public election of the mayor or council president in larger councils.

To help keep the community informed of these changes the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) have developed a toolkit to help people understand the changes, as well as creating a series of videos in language, including Nyangumarta, Martu and Kriol.

ORIC offering free two-day workshops in September 2023

The Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) are running a free two-day workshop on 12 and 13 of September 2023 to help train members and directors of corporations.

The workshop will cover topics such as

• You and your corporation
• Corporate structure
• Roles and responsibilities of directors, members and staff
• The rule book
• Financial management

Applications are welcome from all directors, future directors and members of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations registered under the CATSI Act. Applications from corporation employees are also accepted along with a letter from the CEO and a director of the corporation.

After attending both days you will receive a certificate of attendance.

Aboriginal Ranger Program funding applications open

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservations and Attractions have opened Round 7 of the Aboriginal Ranger Program.

In this round, $13 million is available for new and emerging ranger programs.

DBCA are accepting applications for the next eight weeks, with the closing date being Monday 9 October 2023.

There are two categories open to application, with smaller grants for planning and larger grants for operations.

Rainbow Knowledge recruiting for co-design workshops

Rainbow Knowledge is working to help train health providers to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and asexual (LGBTQA+) young people.

The project aims to help staff working in Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth aged from 14 to 25 who identify as LGBTQA+.

Working with the Telethon Kids Institute, they have developed two reports into the needs of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQA+ people when engaging with healthcare providers.

As part of the second phase of their project, they are recruiting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQA+ young people to take part in co-design workshops to develop an inclusivity training package for Aboriginal Community controlled organisations.

Wattandee Littlewell Aboriginal Corporation Elders Connect & NAIDOC Day event

Wattandee Littlewell Aboriginal Corporation are hosting their Elders Connect and NAIDOC Day event on Wednesday 13 September 2023.

Wattandee Elders and families are invited back to Littlewell Aboriginal Reserve Mingenew to share stories of connection, culture, and Country. The event will include a Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony, Wattandeee dancers, yarning circles, an Elders Table with bush tea and bush medicines, as well as lunch and drinks.

Heritage Council of Western Australia seeking new members

The Heritage Council of Western Australia is looking for six people to become members.

Nominations are now open for experienced and qualified individuals committed to the identification and conservation of WA’s heritage places.

The Council makes recommendations to the Heritage Minister on entries to the State Register of Heritage Places and assists other government agencies and relevant authorities in the management and development of those places, whilst also determining the State’s heritage strategy and policies.

Applicants should have knowledge and experience in heritage matters. The Government is particularly interested in people with specialist experience in Aboriginal cultural heritage.

Learn more about ‘ACHKnowledge’: the new government database for managing Aboriginal cultural heritage in WA

As part of the new Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2021 that has come into effect from 1 July 2023, the old Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 Section 18 approvals process has been replaced by a tiered system.

To replace Section 18 the government have launched an online system – ACHKnowledge – to provide a centralised location for the management of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage (ACH) data and to help with statutory compliance of the management of ACH.

As part of this new system, the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH) has announced it is allowing for organisational accounts to be set up.

Education sessions have been set up in a range of locations, including:

• Perth – Wednesday 12 July
• Mt Magnet – Thursday 27 July
• Meekatharra – Friday 28 July
• Carnamah – Wednesday 2 August
• Carnarvon – Thursday 10 August
• Geraldton – Wednesday 16 August
