Mid West Art Prize open for submissions

The Greater City of Geraldton has reopened the Mid West Art Prize for submissions. Entries need to be submitted by 5:00PM on Monday 1 May, and must include the $40 entry fee.

The total prize pool for the 2017 Mid West Art Prize is $30,000. Awards and prizes will include:

• City of Greater Geraldton Overall Award for Excellence $20,000
• Rio Tinto Midwest Aboriginal Art Award $5,000
• REDFM Youth Award $3,500
• Local Member (MLA) People’s Choice Award $1,500

National Indigenous Youth Parliament open for applications

A program sponsored by the YMCA, Australian Electoral Commission and volunteers is inviting Aboriginal people between the ages of 16 and 25 to apply to the week-long National Indigenous Youth Parliament.

Six people from each state will travel to Canberra to develop their leadership skills, meet Australia’s leaders, learn about democracy and have their say on important issues.

The deadline for applications is Friday 3 March 2017. More information about the program and how to apply can be found on the AEC website here.

Nyangumarta Warrarn TEK project gets published

With the support of YMAC, the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, and the Indigenous Protected Areas Program, the Nyangumarta Warrarn Aboriginal Corporation has published a compilation of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) of the Nyangumarta Warrarn Indigenous Protected Area (IPA).

The booklet is a collection of ethno-botanical information passed down through generations of Nyangumarta people. More than 80 plants were collected, and descriptions of 70 species appear in the book. The data was collected during two surveys of Nyangumarta country in 2014 and 2015.

New Bundiyarra newsletter available

The December edition of Bundiyarra Gardantha, the newsletter produced by the Bundiyarra Aboriginal Community Aboriginal Corporation, is now available for download.

In this issue, Bundiyarra shares stories from its successful language bush camp, photos of a visit by The Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC, Governor of WA, and the exciting work being done to protect the language of the Malgana people from Shark Bay.

Bundiyarra Gardantha, which means “a good place moving forward”, is a quarterly newsletter which has been produced with help of a grant from the City of Greater Geraldton. Digital copies of back issues are available on the Bundiyarra website here, and you can request to be added to their mailing list by contacting them by email.
