Applications are now open for Round 12 of the City of Greater Geraldton’s Community Grants Program.

The grants provide assistance to local community groups and organisations that make positive contributions to the Greater Geraldton region.

Submissions close 5pm, Thursday 28th March 2013.

Geraldton Aboriginal Job Expo

The Geraldton Aboriginal Workforce Development Centre is running its first employer expo to connect Aboriginal job seekers directly with employers.

Jobseekers are encouraged to bring their resumes as many employers attending the event will be taking applications for positions within their companies on the day.

The expo will be at Margaret House in the Bill Sewell Complex on 21 March 2013, from 10am to 2pm.

Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Awards

Indigenous artists are encouraged to enter the 2013 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards.

The awards, now in their 30th year, recognise the important contribution made by Indigenous artists and promote the understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art from both regional and urban Australia.

The Grand Prize is $40,000, with five additional $4,000 awards in various other categories.

Entries close 15 March 2013.

The Indigenous Land Corporation’s (ILC) Land Management program assists Indigenous landholders to sustainably manage and develop land. Applications close 26 April 2013. Click here for eligibility and application requirements.

YMAC recently spent a few days on country with Yamatji artist, Charmaine Green, recording her stories and cultural experiences for the Indigenous Community Story initiative run by WA’s Film & Telelvision Instititute.

The latest issue of YMAC News is now available for download.

It is full of stories about some of the accomplishments in our regions over the last few months. Agreements have been made between the Ngarlawangga people and Montezuma Mining Company Ltd, and the Kurama and Marthudunera people and Iron Ore Holdings Ltd, that are both notable for different reasons.

You can read about the Geraldton native title groups coming together to work towards an Alternative Settlement, and a meeting between Pilbara indigenous women and African women in mining.

We have several new members of our Yamatji Regional Committee and the Board of Directors, and we profile one of them, Beverley Ladyman.

The Badimia people won a battle in the National Native Title Tribunal to help protect one of their most sacred sites, and the Nyiyaparli people have discovered a site that was occupied 41,000 year ago while out on a heritage survey for a mining company.

We also answer one of our most frequently asked question, ‘Why does native title take so long?’
