Native Title Forums

YMAC Native Title Forums

Free to attend for any Traditional Owners and Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC) staff from within YMAC’s representative regions, our annual ‘Native Title Forums’ provide a great opportunity for attendees to network and learn more about native title, its related processes, the different roles and functions of various stakeholders (like YMAC and PBCs), current reforms and opportunities, sector updates, and much more.

In 2024, YMAC’s Native Title Forums focused on providing information about what happens after native title is determined (see agenda below). The two events were held on the following dates at these locations:

Marlpa Region

Thursday, 8 August

Jimblebar Function Room, Wanangkura Stadium, Port Hedland

 Yamatji Region

Thursday, 29 August

Gybes Events and Functions, 212 Marine Terrace, Geraldton

At each forum, YMAC’s Legal team presented on our roles and functions as a Native Title Representative Body (NTRB) in the post-determination space, including providing information on what we can and cannot do following a native title determination. Other staff presentations related to our best practice Return of Native Title Research Materials approaches; the great work being undertaken by our PBC/Executive Office team; an overview of YMAC’s more recent education, publications and advocacy work; and our creation of a best practice guide and timeline in relation to developing renewable energy projects in Western Australia.

Both forums also made time for attendees to ask questions of presenters and have one-on-one discussions with the YMAC staff in attendance.

The forums’ content and delivery were informed by the outcomes of YMAC’s ‘Core Stakeholder Engagement Consultation’ (CSEC) to-date, as well as feedback received following the 2023 forums.

Again, YMAC will use feedback from this year’s forums when planning the 2025 events, aiming to continually improve the format and information provided for attendees.
